2014: The Finding Alice
Project
Attention Deaf
and Allied artists: Submit your monologue today!
Deadline: July 15th, 2013
In preparation for a public presentation in May 2014, SPiLL
and Picasso PRO are seeking bold, authentic and creative expressions of human
need found in our attachment to specific objects. Everyone
has a life story sprinkled with memories of people, symbols and objects that
give it meaning. We want a story from you. Tell us a story about an important
object that you are (or were) attached to - it could be a shoe, a dried flower
or the smell of a cigar. Imagine this object. Tell us your positive or negative
experience with this object. Tell us your story in a dynamic, theatrical and
creative way.
EXAMPLE MONOLOGUE: My little red
suitcase
``As a kid I would
pack my little old fashion red suitcase and run away or threaten to run away in
order to feel love at the level of potency I craved. It meant being called back
– that life couldn`t go on unless I was there. This old fashion suitcase was
the symbol of the journey I was about to embark on. It was a visual symbol of
my departure. It was real and full of dare, possibility and promise…`
For your application to The Finding
Alice Project, you must create your story’s beginning, middle, and ending. You
must include the time, setting and explain what conflict occurred. In this
example the monologue can begin with a child packing a “little red suitcase” in
her bedroom. What does the bedroom look like? What does she pack? The little
girl is happy to know her mom will be upset when she realizes she has left and
has run away. Where is she running away to? What is she running away from? For
the ending tell about the moment when the mother finds the little girl sitting
in the driveway making the hard choice to stay or go. What does the mother say
trying to convince her to stay?
We invite Deaf/HOH artists and professional hearing artists
from Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal to submit their proposed monologues. Professional hearing artists must have an
expressed interest in working alongside Deaf community members and artists. What
object are you (or were you) very attached to? Why? What influence did this
object have on your life?
Seven monologues will be selected for workshop and
exploration with the goal to build a play woven from the stories and shown in
both Toronto and Ottawa in May 2014.
